What is evidence of competence?

What can prove competence? And what does this actually mean? Does it only refer to certificates and diplomas, or other things as well?

One of the basic things you can do in My Portfolio is to indicate (and upload to the service) digital documents that demonstrate your knowledge, skills, and social competences. We call these “evidence” and suggest collecting them in your portfolio.

What does it mean that the evidence “testifies” to possessing competences?

Often, the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about a portfolio is a collection of artwork. Some works are done in charcoal, others in watercolour. The portfolio’s purpose is to demonstrate the artist’s skill in using these techniques. Some drawings depict people, allowing us to assess whether the artist has mastered proportions and is able to convey likeness. Others depict landscapes and architecture, allowing us to assess whether they employ the principles of perspective and combine colours appropriately. Creating each of these requires certain knowledge and skill—and because the artist prepared them, his/her knowledge and skills are demonstrated.

Other types of competences can be proven in the same way.

As you list your knowledge and skills, ask yourself: “How can I demonstrate this to others?” “In which situation has this particular competence been useful to me?” and see which situations from your previous experiences can answer these questions. And if you don’t have anything relevant, prepare something.

For example:

●    Are you a good public speaker? Evidence could include a recording of your speech or the opinions of those who heard it.
●    Do you program in Python? Any application or code you’ve created can be proof of this.
●    Are you good at resolving conflicts? A screenshot of your conversation with a dissatisfied customer in which you successfully resolved their issue could be used as proof.

Remember:

A single competence can be demonstrated by several different forms of evidence. You can demonstrate your English proficiency with a language certificate and by a text written in that language.

A single piece of evidence can demonstrate multiple competences. A description of how you care for a person with disabilities demonstrates not only your skills and knowledge relating to their medical or psychological needs, but also your time management skills and familiarity with selected elements of Polish regulations.

What can be considered evidence?

In My Portfolio, you can upload not only certificates and diplomas, but also your works (music, film, graphic, literary works, concepts, etc.) or links to recordings or other documents in digital form (in .pdf, .png, .jpg and link formats).

However, if you want to submit them to an institution that awards market qualifications or to employers, first check their requirements for evidence. Each awarding body should provide relevant information about this on its website.
