What are operational verbs?

Operational verbs name actions that can be observed, tested, and evaluated. In other words, they are used to describe activities that are intended to be measurable.

This makes it possible to assess whether a given person (regardless of the way this was learned) has the required knowledge, skills and social competences (the process known as validation).

Operational verbs can be assigned to five categories indicating the type of skills being assessed:

1.    analytical (to analyse, investigate, diagnose, prove, evaluate, classify, interpret, identify, assess, forecast, detect, compare, calculate, generalise, conclude, justify, differentiate),
2.    verbal and communicative (to characterise, inform, explain, criticise, describe, present, summarise, clarify, demonstrate),
3.    organisational (to plan, conduct, prepare, maintain, deliver, collect, store, sort, prepare, provide services, arrange, collect, prevent),
4.    technical-manual (to measure, construct, design, regulate, obtain, perform, select, apply, combine, insert),
5.    management (to decide, direct, integrate, mobilise, control, develop, follow, delineate, designate).

You can find a list of example operational verbs in the material Describing market, sectoral and postgraduate qualifications. A guide.
